Gone were the days when a movie was considered a hit based solely on the performance of the actors who played in it. Yes, there were animated movies that had their share of box office toppers. But now, it is a combination of animation and acting that determines if a movie becomes a box office hit. Sometimes, it has to do with more of animation.
The latest box office sensation is Transformers 2 – The Revenge of the Fallen. It’s 5 day total is now an impressive $201.2M just a bit short of the record of The Dark Knight at $203.8M.
The year's leaders are Star Trek & UP which has now more than $250M. So as you can see, after only 5 days, T2 will surely beat these figures.
So far, the top grossers of all time, raking in more than $400M in sales are: The Dark Knight, Spiderman, ET, Star Wars, Shrek 2, Titanic, Star Wars 1 – The Phantom Menace, Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest.
If one notices, all these movies are rich in animation and imagery. So it seems to me that movie buffs nowadays are leaning toward animation in the industry. Does this mean that we will someday see, box office hits more like Shrek & UP? Transformer 3 is already in progress.
Learning from this, to have a box office hit, one does not need high paying actors to star in it. Sometimes voice talents will do. Can the Philippines, with a lot of talented animators, be able to capitalize on this growing trend in the movie industry? Or will it just go the way of the dinosaur?
